Questions Answered
Why should I use composite decking?
Composite decking is made from 100% reclaimed or recycled products.  It is made using
approximately 60% reclaimed wood fiber and 40% used plastics such as stretched film and
recycled grocery bags.

How do I clean composite decking?
Semi-annual cleaning of your deck is recommended to reduce dirt, dust, grime and other
residue build-up. When cleaning, rinse your deck with a garden hose using a fan-tip nozzle at
a pressure not exceeding 1,000 psi.
You can remove tough stains easily with products such as Simple Green or Dow's Scrubbin'
Bubbles.  You can also use these products: BEHR® Multi-Surface Cleaner & Mildew Stain
Remover, ARMOR ALL® E-Z Deck Wash, or OLYMPIC® Deck Cleaner.

What is the price difference between redwood and composite decking?
Cost differences between redwood and composite decking has significantly decreased in the
past year as the price of lumber and fuel continues to rise.  When you consider the
maintenance factor of redwood, the cost differences begin to even out.

Can composite decking serve as a structural element in my deck?
No.  Composite decking is not a structural product.  The structure of the deck will be made
out of wood.

Does the color of the composite decking change after it has been installed?
Yes.  Most composite decking will "season" in about 4 months after installed.  After it's initial
fade, the color will remain the same.  Each brand of composite decking will show you a
"before" and "after" color chart on their website.

Can my composite decking be painted?
Yes, but painting composite decking will defeat the purpose of a low maintenance deck.
Once painted, it must be continually painted to maintain it's appearance.

Is composite decking safe to walk on when it's wet?
Yes.  Composite decking usually has a slip-resistant surface making it safer to walk on while
wet.  However, caution should always be used when walking on wet surfaces.

How high can I build a deck without railings?
We would recommend not higher than 16" for safety reasons.

Does composite decking require a closer joist span?
Yes.  Composite decking requires no more than 16".  Wood can span as far as 24".

Can my deck support a hot tub?
Not without special planning and consideration.

How often should I seal my wood deck?
Most wood decks require annual maintenance.  Depending on the weather in your area, some
decks may require more than annual maintenance.

Additional Tips For Composite Decks:
  • Dragging furniture and other objects across the deck boards may cause surface
    scratches.
  • Remove food, spills and other debris and clean immediately to minimize the possibility
    of staining.

  • Always test any cleaner on a small portion of your deck before cleaning the entire
    deck.

  • Always follow manufacturers' application instructions when using any cleaner.

  • Please note that any cleaner can lighten the color of your deck.

  • Place mats under metal objects to protect against rust stains.

  • Place grill mats under your grill to protect your deck from grease spills.

  • Never mix two or more cleaning agents when cleaning your deck.

  • Do not use a metal shovel to remove snow or ice from your deck, as you may cause
    damage to the deck surface.

  • Always follow proper gapping (installation) instructions to prevent water from
    accumulating on your deck.

  • Keep the area under your deck clean and well ventilated.

  • Never apply harsh solvents such as acetone, gasoline, benzene, carbon tetrachloride
or paint thinner to your deck.

  • Sanding the surface to remove stains is not recommended.
